Birds of Aachen
I can’t read German, so I have no idea why the there is a raven on the poster. But it exists, so I’m happy. It’s the only corvid around Aachen.
Instead, the cobblestone streets of Aachen are full of plump pigeons.
The City of Aachen
It’s a tourist town turned up to 11: five beautiful landmarks abut each other and they have a new museum whose main message is ‘Charlemagne was here.’
The cathedral and town hall have been remade and restructured over time to meet the needs of modern people, so you can pass from the 800’s to the 1960’s in a matter of feet.
How the Birds Feel About It
The pigeons are oblivious to all this because they are eternal. Even on rainy, chilly days, they flock on at the base of buildings, strutting and cooing gently.
From their view, the posh shops and stumbling apes are food sources
There aren’t many other birds, although the Aachener Dom does have a mosaic with some falcons. It was a later addition to the original octagon, but it works well since the Middle Ages were big on falconing.
I guess birds are not big on sulfur springs. Aachen has been the seat of fancy hot springs since Roman times, but birds are fine with normal water to flutter in and drink. They are onto something, I think. We insist that has use to us must be also magic.
Let us take some lessons on perspective from pigeons.
