I will join you in blaming Hemingway. Twain said to pick the right word, but I don’t think he advised dropping a type of word, and Orwell was against convoluted ‘business speak.’ The ‘no adverb’ thing is pretty specific, and Orwell is way more general. I remember his essay-was it called ‘on politics?’- mentioned gerunds where nouns are used to make verbs meant to mean nothing much.
Now I need to go find that essay.
